Did you know:

The Olive is an evergreen tree or shrub native to the Mediterranean, Asia and parts of Africa. It is short and squat, and rarely exceeds 8–15 meters in height.  The silvery green leaves are oblong in shape, measuring 4–10 cm long and 1–3 cm wide. The trunk is typically gnarled and twisted.

There is an olive tree in Crete, claimed to be over 2,000 years old (based of tree ring analysis) and another, on the island of Brijuni, Istria in Croatia, a well-known olive tree that is calculated to be 1,600 years old. It still gives fruit (about 30 kg per year), which is made into top quality olive oil.

The olive tree is one of the symbols of Athena, the Greek goddess, and is frequently mentioned in the Bible and the Qur'an.

At Magpie Gully we grow Manzanillo and Frantoio olives for our two distinctive oils.  Kalamata and Sevillano olives are produced specifically for table olives, while the Manzanillo has a dual role in producing oil and beautiful table olives.  We also have a number of Koroneiki trees and these are proving to be very popular as a gourmet table olive.   The Koroneiki is a small olive but with a wonderful burst of flavour to tempt the tastebuds.

Manzanillo olives are a larger round cherry like fruit, unlike the more traditional oval shaped olives.  They are picked when the overall ripeness is at about 50/50, green to black, that gives that lovely bit of pepper on the back of the palate.

The Frantoio, on the other hand, is picked when the colour is just turning, allowing us to achieve a lovely green, fruity flavour with grassy characteristics.

What is Extra Virgin Olive Oil?

An olive is a small drupe 1–2.5 cm long, thinner-fleshed and smaller in wild plants than in orchard cultivars. Olives are harvested at the green stage or left to ripen to a rich purple color (black olive).  The amount of oil contained in the fruit differs greatly in the various cultivars; the pericarp is usually 60–70% oil. Typical yields are 1.5-2.2 ltrs of oil per tree per year.

"Extra Virgin Olive Oil is obtained from the first pressing of the olives.   Oil can be called extra virgin if it has a free fatty acid (FFA) content of less than 0.8% of 1%.   Low FFAs can only be achieved if the oil is made with sound olives and extracted quickly following harvest and in the cleanest of conditions.   Typically in Australia, extra virgin olive oils are 0.185%, roughly 4 times under the most stringent legal limits.” (ref:  The Australian Olive Association).   Magpie Gully Olives always achieve this standard.
